Mayor Deegan's River City Readers

Less than half of third graders are reading on grade level, so improving literacy rates is a top priority for Mayor Deegan and her administration. It’s an economic development issue, a public safety issue, and a quality-of-life issue for the entire city.

Let’s get DUUUVAL reading! Mayor Deegan’s River City Readers is an ongoing citywide literacy challenge for school-age children. Participants are encouraged to read for at least 20 minutes each day and log their reading minutes.

Since the initiative launched, Jacksonville families have logged more than 3 million minutes of reading.

How students log their reading minutes depends on where they attend school.

Duval County Public Schools Students

Students attending Duval County Public Schools, including traditional and charter schools, will log their reading minutes through PageHive, a reading progress tracking application developed by the school district. PageHive can be accessed using a cellphone or computer.

PageHive allows students to:

• Log and track their reading minutes.
• Build a personalized virtual bookshelf.
• View their reading history and progress.
• Rate books they have completed.
• View books assigned by their teachers.

How to Log Reading Minutes in PageHive

1. Visit the PageHive website and select Sign in.
2. Sign in using your DCPS Microsoft account. Parents or guardians who do not have a DCPS account can use the enrollment link provided below the Sign in button.
3. Once signed in, select Continue to open your dashboard.
4. Under Add Books, search for a book by title, author or ISBN and add it to your reading history.
5. Under Reading History, select the book you are reading.
6. Enter the number of minutes you spent reading and select Log Reading to save your session.
7. Continue logging your reading minutes each day. When you finish a book, you can mark it as completed and give it a rating.

Private and Homeschooled Students

Students attending private schools and homeschooled students will continue to log their River City Readers minutes through Beanstack.

Participants may register and log their reading minutes on the River City Readers Beanstack website or download the Beanstack Tracker app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

Register for the River City Readers Challenge in Beanstack

1. Open the Beanstack Tracker app and choose At my library, school or bookstore, or visit the River City Readers Beanstack website.
2. Search for Jax Library or River City Readers.
3. Select Jax Library River City Readers (FL).
4. Select Sign up and follow the prompts to create an account.
5. Add any additional readers who will be logging minutes through the account.
6. Begin logging reading minutes and earning achievements and badges.

Upcoming Events

Mayor Deegan hosts literacy events throughout the year at schools, libraries and community centers to promote the importance of reading. The River City Readers Bookmobile also travels throughout Jacksonville, bringing books and literacy activities directly to children and families.
