The National Archives are the official repository for records of the United States military and other government agencies. These records include:
- Military personnel service records. Recent military service and medical records are not online. However, most veterans and their next of kin can obtain free copies of their DD-214 (Report of Separation) and other military service records using the methods listed.
- Textual documents including unit reports and rosters; maps and plans; photographs; posters; motion pictures and sound recordings; and electronic records.
