Frequently Asked Questions
I’m the spouse/child of a veteran. Can I claim any benefits?
What is available is up to very situationally intriciate standards.  They would need to come to the office and speak with a VSO in order to get a full assessment of what they may be entitled to recieve from the VA.  . They will need to prove their relation to the Veteran by bringing a Birth Certificate or Marriage License; if the Veteran is deceased, they will need a Death Certificate as well. As always, they will need to bring the DD214 as well.
I need a copy of my own/ my spouse’s / my child’s / my parent’s DD214, can you provide that?
  • MAVD would not have those records unless they have were provided to us during their previous visit and we ourselves put it into our own database. If they have been here before and provided it, then they are more than welcome to come to our office and pick it up only (no mail, email, etc. as it is an information sensitive document).
  • If we are able to provide a copy of the DD214, a VSO hand it out as it is an information sensitive document. As such, they must provide their ID proving their identity. If the veteran is deceased a death certificate will need to be shown. Additionally, if a relation is trying to acquire this document, proof of said relation must be provided as well, following the same rules as before.
  • If we don’t have it in our records and don’t have access to the records as well, the inquired will have to submit an SF-180 form (Request of Records) to the National Archives.
I’m looking to schedule an appointment, can I do that now?
If you are are seeking an evaluation, medical assessment, ID Card or would like to be enrolled, they will need to get in contact with the VA or visit any local VA Clinic. If you like to speak with a VSO, we only take walk-ins for this service and are welcome to come during our office hours from 7am-3pm every weekday (Excluding holidays).
I am being discharged soon and would like to see what benefits I can get/ start a claim?
  • Until a veteran is discharged and has acquired a DD214, we are unable to start any claims or benefits processes.
  • The exception to this is a BDD Claim (Benefits Delivery at Discharge) which can only be applied for between 180 to 90 days before discharge, meaning the veteran must know their separation date. (Once again, 89 days or less, they will have to wait until they get the DD214 before we can start any process).
Any inquiries about educational benefits.
If a veteran is curious about what educational benefits they may have, they can speak with any of our VSOs or call the VA Education hotline 1(888) 442-4551.
I am looking to upgrade my Discharge, would that be here?
The application process for a correction or review of a Discharge is up to the Department of Defense and not MAVD. We can provide a DD149 and/or DD293 to the Veteran as well as an application guide but our assistance beyond that is very limited. Veterans will have to send it to their branch of service (provided in the application).
I’m a veteran in need of legal assistance; can you guys help me?
  • If you are trying to speak to a paralegal or attorney, you will need to get in contact with Jax Legal Aide/ Three Rivers Legal Services.
  • MAVD offers Ask-a-Lawyer service provided twice a month.  Please see our calendar on this website to see the next time legal services will be in our offices or call 904-255-5550
Can you help me set up my own/ my relations burial procedure? They were a veteran.
  • You can contact National Cemetery here in Jacksonville at 904-766-5222 https://www.cem.va.gov/cems/nchp/Jacksonville.asp
  • If you are looking for legal assistance, you can schedule and appointment with our Ask-A-Lawyer service.
  • If you need assistance with burial benefits such as partial reimbursement of funeral expences, you can come in MAVD offices and speak with a VSO.
My bank account change and I need you guys to change where my money is going.
If a Veteran is looking to change their banking or direct deposit information for their benefits, they can come to our office and a VSO can assist or they can call VA EFT number (800) 222-1000.  When a Veteran calls the 800 number they will be required to answer secuirty questions and the VA representative will be albe to change their direct deposit information.
