Rahman K. Johnson, Ph.D.
A Trailblazer in Public Service, Media and Education

Throughout a career spanning public service, higher education, journalism, media, and the arts, Dr. Rahman K. Johnson has embraced a singular calling: building a community that remembers its past, responds to the needs of its present, and reaches confidently toward its future.

A proud Jacksonville, Florida native, Dr. Johnson's story began in the neighborhoods that shaped his values and continues in the city he now serves. Earning degrees at Edward Waters (BA), Seton Hall (MA), and Jackson State (Ph.D.) Universities, he has built a career defined by determination, preparation, and an unwavering belief that leadership begins with listening and succeeds through action.

Since election to the Jacksonville City Council in 2023, Dr. Johnson has earned a reputation for transforming long-standing conversations into meaningful progress. He helped advance the long-awaited widening of Old Middleburg Road after more than two decades of planning, secured the inclusion of an annual HBCU game in Jacksonville's Stadium of the Future agreement, and continues to lead the effort to codify the Neighborhood Bill of Rights, giving people a stronger voice in the future of their communities.

His leadership reflects an equally deep commitment to placemaking—the belief that every great city should tell its own story. Under the leadership of Dr Johnson, Jacksonville established a monument honoring the Sapelo Seven, led the effort to rename the Jacksonville Fire Museum in honor of Henry Bradley, the first firefighter to lose his life in the line of duty, championed a memorial recognizing the life of Civil Rights martyr Johnnie Mae Chappell, and secured the designation of Ray Charles Place at the site of the legendary musician's Jacksonville home. Each project affirms a simple principle: communities grow stronger when history is visible, honored, and shared.

On the Jacksonville City Council, Dr. Johnson serves on the Finance and Land Use & Zoning Committees. He chairs the Jacksonville Waterways Commission and the Value Adjustment Board, serves as interim chair of the Mayor's Council on Fitness and Well-Being, represents Jacksonville on the Board of Directors of the Florida League of Cities, and serves as council liaison to the Joint Planning Commission, the Jacksonville Public Library and the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville. His commitment to leadership extends beyond elected office through active engagement with organizations that advance journalism, scholarship, public service, civic engagement, and international understanding, including Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, the National Urban League (Quarter Century Club) the United Nations Association of the United States, and SAG-AFTRA. Across every role, his focus remains remarkably consistent: thoughtful planning, principled leadership, accountable government, and sustainable public impact.

An award-winning poet and author, Dr. Johnson wrote Living, Loving, Letting Go, recognized by the American Library Association as Book of the Year. His writing reveals the same philosophy that guides his life—a belief that words can awaken possibility, ideas can reshape institutions, and purposeful service can alter the course of a community. That vision continues to define his life's work and the legacy he is committed to building.
