The City of Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services (ACPS) is in urgent need of fosters and adopters to help get 100 dogs out of the shelter. The shelter, whose capacity is 264 dogs, currently houses 377 dogs. This means that nearly 100 dogs share a kennel, cutting their living space in half.
Dog intake has risen 24% from last year, and while the number of adoptions has also risen, it is not enough. To alleviate overcrowding, ACPS has a new goal: 100 dogs adopted or in foster by the end of the week.
“Our staff and volunteers are giving their all to care for every animal that comes through our doors—but the constant flow of new arrivals hasn’t let up,” says ACPS Chief Michael Bricker. “We’re in the peak of our intake season, and the need for help is greater than ever. We’ve never stopped fighting for these animals, and we never will—but we can’t do it without you. Your support is always vital, but right now, it’s critical.”
To help encourage adoptions, ACPS is waiving fees for the next 100 dogs adopted. That means adopters can put those savings toward essentials like a crate, toys, food, or even a new leash and collar—everything a new pet needs to feel at home.
ACPS is open 7 days a week: Monday-Friday 12:00-7:00 and Saturday-Sunday 10:00 AM-6:00 PM. Interested adopters, fosters, and even short-term fosters who want to give dogs a brief kennel break, are all encouraged to come to the shelter any time during business hours.
Pictured: Lego came in this morning before we even opened. He's a terrified, blocky-headed boy who was so stressed, he rubbed his nose raw in the kennel in the transport van on his way over here. He was found as a stray hunkered down on someone's front porch, growling and refusing to move.
