Did you know… it has been 11 years since a hurricane has impacted Florida? And 52 years since a hurricane has impacted Jacksonville? June 1 marks the first day of hurricane season. Mayor Lenny Curry, to be joined by Director of Duval County Emergency Management Steve Woodard and National Weather Service Jacksonville, Meteorologist in Charge Scott Cordero, will announce the release of the 2016 Hurricane Preparedness Guide at a news conference Wednesday. The guide, which includes tools, tips and resources for residents and businesses to prepare for hurricane season, will be available Sunday, June 5. Media are invited to attend the news conference followed by a brief tour of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

The summer months are quickly approaching, bringing families to Jacksonville pools and beaches. In observance of Healthy and Safe Swimming Week (May 23 – 29) and the approaching Memorial Day holiday, Mayor Lenny Curry, to be joined by Councilman Garrett Dennis, will host a news conference announcing SPLASH Squad, a drowning prevention program led by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services department. Designed to educate the public on safe swimming practices, SPLASH Squad provides free swimming lessons to eligible Duval County youth at 31 JAXParks pools throughout the city. City pools open this weekend through Labor Day.

Brussels, Paris and Boston are among the cities that recently faced violent acts that affected various operations and services throughout their municipalities. Continuing the commitment to improving public safety in Jacksonville, Mayor Lenny Curry, joined by Sheriff Mike Williams, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department officials and other City leadership, will participate in a simulated emergency exercise in an effort to strengthen preparation and operation planning should similar acts of violence occur in Jacksonville. Media are invited to attend a briefing preceding the exercise.

Demonstrating his commitment to programs, services and offerings that improve public safety, Mayor Lenny Curry is presenting a proclamation identifying April 24 – 30 as National Re-entry Week, an observance established this year by the U.S. Department of Justice. In its inaugural year, the observance aims to bring awareness to the challenges ex-offenders face re-entering society after incarceration. Students and leaders from the City of Jacksonville’s D.A.W.N. program will receive the proclamation from Mayor Curry during a ceremony being held tomorrow at 3 p.m.

Too often, community leaders focus on the issues of today, instead of clearly visioning the future. As an aid to seeing the path to the future, the City of Jacksonville’s Environmental Protection Board (EPB) and the University of North Florida Environmental Center annually present the Environmental Symposium.  The symposium brings together residents, government agencies, utilities and innovators in a forum designed to foster an atmosphere of cooperation in environmental achievement. In addition to opening, lunch and closing general sessions, there are breakout sessions on topics of interest.

The Tomorrow’s Leaders competition is an annual highlight of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast, recognizing and awarding youth in our community who exemplify the philosophies of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through leadership, community involvement, volunteerism, and civic responsibility. The Tomorrow’s Leaders competition winners will be recognized at The City of Jacksonville’s 39th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast on January 16, 2026, at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.
