The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department and the City of Jacksonville are joining communities nationwide to observe Fire Prevention Week, October 5–11, 2025. This year’s national theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” highlights the importance of charging, storing, and recycling batteries safely.
Lithium-ion batteries power the devices we rely on every day, from phones and laptops to toys and scooters. When handled improperly, they can overheat, spark, or cause fires. Jacksonville is committed to raising awareness and helping families prevent these risks through education and outreach.
Nationwide, there are an estimated 2,000 battery-related fires every year, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented more than 25,000 incidents of overheating or fires in a five-year span. These numbers underscore the importance of practicing safe charging habits at home.
