Memorial Day, a time to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation, also serves as a reminder of the deep respect we owe to our nation's symbols. MAVD will coordinate the proper and respectful disposition of all flags deposited in the box, partnering with local veterans' organizations to ensure they are retired in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.

“This Memorial Day, as we reflect on the courage and sacrifice of our fallen heroes, it's also a perfect time to ensure we show respect to the American flag—one of our most enduring symbols of freedom,” said Mayor Donna Deegan. “We’re proud to offer our residents this new resource to honorably retire flags that are no longer serviceable.”

The drop box is now permanently located just outside Suite 175 of the City Hall Annex at 117 W. Duval Street, allowing the public year-round access to deposit their unserviceable U.S. flags.

“This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to respect, honor, and serve those who served us,” said Harrison Conyers, Director of the Military Affairs and Veterans Department. “Properly retiring worn flags is more than a ceremonial duty—it’s a gesture of gratitude, and we’re proud to offer a way for our community to participate.”
