Sal Taylor Creek Preserve includes the Sal Taylor property, which consists of 406 acres purchased on November 16, 2001 for $1,869,000 by the City of Jacksonville, with the help of an FCT grant. FCT reimbursed $941,157 to the City. The conceptual site plan in the FCT management plan shows parking, trails, a horseshoe pit, an exercise trail, a wildlife observation platform, and picnic areas. The property was purchased from Trust of Public Land. The preserve was previously known as the "Nathan Hale Property". The Preserve was renamed to Sal Taylor, after the Sal Taylor Creek tributary that joins Black Creek. From Sal Taylor Creek to Black Creek it flows approx. 13 km. Black Creek then flows southeast for approx. 27 km to the St. Johns River, draining into the Atlantic Ocean. Kayak users, hikers and horseback riders enjoy views of blackwater streams, swamps, forest areas and wildflowers.
