About Leonard Abess Park
The park was named for Leonard L. Abess Sr., a prominent banker who was instrumental in providing the land to the City of Jacksonville for park development. Mayor Ed Austin and Councilman Dick Brown held a dedication/ribbon-cutting ceremony for the park on October 19, 1994. The park offers playscapes, grills, a picnic shelter, restrooms, 2 youth baseball fields, a basketball court, 2 tennis courts, a soccer field and paved trails. In recent years, a colorful water feature was added and on September 4, 2020 a dog park was opened. Councilman Aaron Bowman was instrumental in opening the dog park during the COVID-19 pandemic. He felt strongly that constituents should have a safe and healthy alternative for experiencing the outdoors.
