Main Street Bridge Pedestrian Walkway and Vehicular Lane Closure to Begin August 24 for Riverfront Plaza Improvements
Beginning Monday, August 24, the Main Street Bridge will undergo lane and pedestrian walkway closures as part of the Riverfront Plaza Main Street Bridge Nub Removal Project, led by the City of Jacksonville Department of Public Works and contractor, The Haskell Company.
What: Southbound lanes on the Main Street Bridge toward Riverplace Boulevard will be reduced to one lane, and the southbound pedestrian walkway will be closed for the duration of construction. Pedestrians should follow posted detour signage for rerouted access. Northbound traffic will remain open with two lanes throughout the project.
When: Construction begins August 24, 2026, with completion anticipated by January 30, 2027.
Where: Main Street Bridge, connecting Downtown's Northbank and Southbank over the St. Johns River.
Why: This construction is the first step in making a permanent pedestrian connection from the Main Street Bridge to the new Riverfront Plaza, as part of Phase Two of construction for the Plaza.
Details: Motorists and pedestrians traveling between the Northbank and Southbank should anticipate delays and plan for alternate routes during the closure period.
