CITY TO ACTIVATE COOLING CONTINGENCY PLAN THROUGH SUNDAY, AUGUST 16, 2026
The City of Jacksonville is activating its Cooling Center Contingency Plan through Sunday, August 16, as the National Weather Service forecasts a heat index of up to 111 degrees across Duval County.
When activated Monday through Saturday, Cooling Centers will be available at various City of Jacksonville facilities during normal hours of operation. These facilities will be open regardless of whether activation thresholds are met and include:
- All COJ Public Libraries: 21 accessible and air-conditioned library locations.
- All COJ Community Centers: 20 centers available in multiple neighborhoods.
- All COJ Pools and Splash Pads: 31 pools and 18 splash pads providing immediate cooling relief.
On Sunday, August 16, two main Cooling Centers will be activated:
- Main Library, 303 N. Laura St.
- Legends Center, 5130 Soutel Dr.
Operating hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Free rides to Cooling Centers are available through the Jacksonville Transportation Authority on activation days. Riders must let the bus driver know they are headed to a Cooling Center.
Residents with outdoor plans are encouraged to stay cool and follow these heat safety tips:
- Avoid peak heat: Minimize outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. If you must be outside, find shade and take frequent breaks in cooler areas.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles: Temperatures can quickly become dangerously high and potentially fatal.
- Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke: Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. If you or someone else experiences these symptoms, seek medical help immediately and move to a cooler environment.
