City of Jacksonville Opens 2027 Tomorrow’s Leaders Essay Contest Presented by VyStar Credit Union
The City of Jacksonville has opened the 2027 Tomorrow’s Leaders competition presented by VyStar Credit Union. The Tomorrow’s Leaders Essay Contest, a signature component of the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast, recognizes students who exemplify Dr. King’s philosophies of leadership, community involvement, volunteerism, and civic responsibility.
Submissions are now open and close on Monday, October 19, 2026. Winners will be recognized at the 40th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Presented by Florida Blue on Friday, January 15, 2027, at the Prime Osborn Convention Center. The City of Jacksonville, Jacksonville Branch NAACP, Jacksonville Urban League, and JAX Chamber will announce additional event and ticket details in November 2026.
“At VyStar, investing in young people helps build stronger communities and a brighter future for all,” said Kemal Gasper, Vice President of Community Engagement at VyStar Credit Union. “The Tomorrow’s Leaders Essay Contest challenges students to reflect on Dr. King’s legacy while sharing their own vision for creating positive change. We are proud to partner with the City of Jacksonville to recognize these inspiring young leaders and celebrate the impact they are already making in our community.”
This year’s essay prompt is inspired by Dr. King’s words: “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” The quote acknowledges temporary setbacks without letting them extinguish the long-term vision.
How to Enter
Teachers and mentors are invited to nominate students to write essays that reflect themes drawn from Dr. King’s life and teachings. Full submission guidelines and criteria are available on the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast event page.
