CELEBRATING CUSTOMER SERVICE WEEK: CITY OF JACKSONIVLLE PUTS “JAX WASTE WIZARD” RIGHT IN YOUR POCKET

Free tool answers "Where does this go?" instantly, sends pickup reminders and builds personalized collection calendars

As the City of Jacksonville celebrates National Customer Service Week, October 5-9, Mayor Donna Deegan’s administration is encouraging residents to try Jax Waste Wizard, a free downloadable app that lets residents know how to dispose of just about anything within Jacksonville’s system.

The Jax Waste Wizard is a searchable database of thousands of household items. Residents type in an item, such as a greasy pizza box, a leftover can of paint or a mattress, and get disposal instructions based on Jacksonville’s own rules: trash, recycling or another option. It’s built into the Jacksonville Waste & Recycle app for iPhone and Android, which has already been downloaded more than 5,000 times. It’s also available online at Jacksonville.gov/wastewizard for residents who would rather not download an app.

Residents asked for simple, quick access to pickup schedules and recycling guidance. With the updated app and website, residents can:

  • Find their collection day instantly by entering their address.
  • See a personalized collection schedule with the Calendar Wizard, which shows which cart goes out each week and can be downloaded to iCal, Google Calendar or Microsoft Outlook.
  • Sign up for free reminders by email, text or phone, so they never miss a pickup day.
  • Get alerts about schedule changes caused by holidays or storms.
  • Learn how to sort waste correctly with Jax Waste Wizard guidance on garbage, recycling, household hazardous waste, yard waste and more.
  • Report a missed pickup or other issue through a direct link to MyJax, without going through multiple websites.
  • Get reliable answers any time, without waiting for assistance.

The app was recently updated with an improved design, calendar fixes and a faster Jax Waste Wizard.

“Great customer service means meeting people where they are, and for a lot of our residents, that’s on their phone,” said Mayor Donna Deegan. “The Jax Waste Wizard provides clear answers in seconds, any time of day. When residents get it right the first time, we get fewer missed pickups, fewer callbacks and a cleaner city. That’s what good government should feel like.”

When residents sort items correctly, recycling loads are less likely to be contaminated and rejected, which keeps processing costs down. Correct sorting also means fewer overflowing carts and repeat pickups, which helps collection routes run efficiently. And every question the Waste Wizard answers is one less call residents need to make to 630-CITY.

“The Jax Waste Wizard gives our community confidence that the answers they need are always in one place,” said Monica Cichowlas, City of Jacksonville Customer Service Manager. “We encourage everyone to check out the Jax Waste Wizard before their next collection day.”

Jax Waste Wizard also supports 904Lean, the City’s continuous improvement initiative, which focuses on removing unnecessary steps and rework from City services so residents get faster, more reliable results.

National Customer Service Week is a national observance recognizing the importance of customer service and the people who provide it. The City is using the week to highlight tools that help residents get answers quickly and on their own schedule.
