ACPS ANTICIPATING MULTIPLE LARGE IMPOUNDS, ADOPTERS AND FOSTERS NEEDED
The City of Jacksonville’s Animal Care and Protective Services is currently housing 433 dogs – in a total of 264 kennels – with more expected to arrive this week due to two large impound cases. Shelter staff urges the public to visit the shelter and foster or adopt a dog to alleviate the shelter stress caused by being so full.
“Even brief foster breaks from the shelter are invaluable for our pets, since we learn so much about them and they have a chance to decompress in a home with a family,” said ACPS Chief Michael Bricker. “Every kennel we free up by sending a pet to foster or to a loving home means we can help another animal in need. Being this full is hard on both the dogs and the staff caring for them, and the community stepping up to help will make a huge difference. Lifesaving requires everyone in a community, and everyone can make a difference.”
For those looking to add a pet to their family by adopting, all adoption fees are currently waived. Check out JaxPawFinder – the City’s first AI-powered app – before you arrive to see which animals match with you based on age, size, personality, and energy level.
Over the past year, ACPS has had record lifesaving despite record demand. They cared for nearly 30% more animals and still increased total adoptions by 44.5%, from 2,890 to 4,176. That means more dogs are going home and fewer are being euthanized. Dogs reunited with their owners jumped 50.2%, dog adoptions rose nearly 50%, and dog euthanasia dropped 15.5% even as dog intake climbed 29%. The dog save rate improved to 88.41%. This success is possible because the community has stepped up every time ACPS asked, and they’re doing so again.
