Friendship Fountain Grand Reopening Set for Saturday

June 14, 2011

Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton will join City Council members Don Redman and Warren Jones, and other officials to celebrate the reopening of Friendship Fountain Park, 9 – 11 a.m., Saturday, June 18.  The event will feature a dedication ceremony, entertainment and family-friendly activities, in conjunction with the Museum of Science & History (MOSH). 

Countywide Reading Initiative Launched

Mayor John Peyton helped launch "Read It Forward Jacksonville" at Matthew Gilbert Middle School, Tuesday, June 7.   A reading initiative aimed at raising the literacy rate for students throughout Duval County,  the project will involve partnerships between the Duval County School Board, the City of Jacksonville and business and community leaders to help teach Jacksonville's children about the importance of reading.

City Council Summer Break

In accordance with Ordinance 2005-361-E, the first committee week and City Council meeting of the month of July are suspended for a summer break.  The City Council will resume committee meetings the week of July 18th, followed by the City Council meeting on July 26, 2011.

Memorial Day Ceremonies Honor Fallen Warriors

Jennifer Carroll and a host of state, city and military leaders Monday, May 30, at Jacksonville’s Memorial Day observance ceremony honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the nation.

Jacksonville Jazz Festival Downtown May 26-29

Mayoral Transition Begins

Promising to deliver the “most complete, most transparent transition” ever, Mayor John Peyton stood on the steps of City Hall and welcomed his successor, Mayor-Elect Alvin Brown. Mayor Peyton and his senior staff spent all morning with Brown’s family – wife Santhea and sons Joshua and Jordan – and the new mayor’s transition team. 

Music Video Filmed in Downtown Jacksonville

On May 9, 2011, national recording band, Theory of a Deadman, filmed a music video in Downtown Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Actor Donal Logue (Blade, The Patriot and Zodiac) was featured in the video along with the band members. The video will air on MTV this summer.

Mayor Peyton Secures $1 Billion Pension Deal

After nearly 18 months of discussions with the Police and Fire Pension Fund, Mayor John Peyton and Peter Sleiman, chairman of the Police and Fire Pension Fund’s (PFPF) Special Committee on Pension Reform, announced today a pension reform plan that will save approximately $700 million over the next 35 years. The proposal will be presented to the full PFPF Board for consideration next Wednesday and requires approval by the Jacksonville City Council.

Blueprint for Prosperity Releases 2010 Annual Report

The City of Jacksonville's Blueprint for Prosperity committee has released its 2010 Blueprint Annual Report. The document provides a snapshot of the city's progress as measured against set benchmarks in nine key areas: education, infrastructure, leadership, economic development, quality of life, and racial opportunity and harmony.
