Safe Speeds Save Lives; Jacksonville Advocates Organize for World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on November 15th

October 28, 2025
On Saturday, November 15 at 10:30 a.m., Bike Walk Jax, the City of Jacksonville Transportation Planning Division, and the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization will host the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims at Artist Square Park in Riverside. Families of traffic crash victims, street safety advocates, transportation professionals, and community leaders will gather to honor lives lost and call for safer streets. This event is one of hundreds taking place around the world.

Between 2022–2024, 471 people lost their lives in traffic crashes in Jacksonville. Of those, 147 (31%) were bicyclists or pedestrians, according to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). Additionally, 7% of local traffic fatalities were youth under 18, based on the City’s Vision Zero Action Plan crash analysis. In 2024, Jacksonville was ranked the 15th most dangerous metropolitan area for pedestrians nationwide in Smart Growth America’s Dangerous by Design Report. This year alone, 138 lives have already been lost to traffic violence on our roadways. While the City has seen a downward trend in bicyclist and pedestrian fatalities in recent years, much work remains to make Jacksonville’s roadways safe for all modes of travel.

All traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable. A record number of communities are adopting Vision Zero — a commitment to eliminating traffic deaths and severe injuries through a Safe System approach. Bike Walk Jax is part of a growing network of advocates nationwide calling for proven safety measures, including redesigning streets, lowering speed limits, and implementing safer traffic policies.

Speed is a leading cause of severe and fatal crashes in Jacksonville and across the U.S. Reducing speeds by even small amounts can make a significant difference, particularly for vulnerable road users such as people walking, biking, children, and seniors. Research (20-is-Plenty Study) shows that a 1 mph reduction in average speed is associated with a 5% decrease in crashes.

This year’s event will call on the City of Jacksonville to adopt an ordinance allowing the implementation of speed cameras in school zones and to revise the City’s school zone policy to include middle and high schools.

The World Day of Remembrance is a global event held annually on the third Sunday in November to honor the 1.35 million people killed and millions injured in traffic crashes worldwide, while advocating for policies and practices that prevent future tragedies.
