Frigid Temperatures Did Not Stop Citizens from Building Community Capacity in Northwest Jacksonville.

The New Town Success Zone and the Mayor’s Community Based Crime Reduction Program joined forces for their Cervical Cancer Awareness and Grocery Giveaway Event.

11 community partners and 28 volunteers braved early morning winter weather to distribute free groceries and provide preventative medical care services. Feeding Northeast Florida graciously donated 7,207 pounds of food valued at $9,872 to 128 families. Florida Department of Health Practitioners and Medical Professionals spread awareness about their Cervical Cancer, Breast Cancer, and Overdose Prevention Programs. They also distributed rain ponchos, face masks, COVID-19 self-test kits, and educational booklets about local low-to-no cost treatment centers to 39 residents that passed through the drive-thru line. Winn Dixie Nurses administered COVID-19 and Flu jabs to willing participants after educating them about the benefits of being vaccinated. Community Specialist from American Heart Association and Florida Blue demonstrated blood pressure checks, provided physical/mental wellness guides, and gave away medical management supplies. They even had bilingual advocates on site to translate information for non-English speakers. Partnership for Child Heath, United Health Care, and Simply Health gave away treats and information about family insurance coverage plans. The New Town Success Zone gave away bus passes to 45 people that needed transportation support for respite care. This event was the perfect example of encouraging social responsibility and cohesion to minimize the impact of health disparities in vulnerable neighborhoods.
